Question 4 the day: May 7, 2002
In this question, there is a question statement which is followed by two statements. You have to decide whether the information provided in the two statements is sufficient for answering the question.

Mark 1
If the question can be answered by using one of the statements alone, but cannot be answered by using the other statement alone.
Mark 2
If the question can be answered by using either statement alone.
Mark 3
If the question can be answered by using both statements together, but cannot be answered by using either statement alone.
Mark 4
If the question cannot be answered even by using both the statements together.
Question
Is circle M larger than circle N?

(A) The diameter of circle M is larger than the radius of circle N.
(B) The ratio of the circumference to the diameter of circle M is the same as that of circle N.
Correct Answer - (4)

Solution

We need to find out if circle M is larger than circle N. The larger the diameter of a circle, the larger will the circle be.
From statement A: Diameter of circle M is greater than the radius of circle N. But we do not know if the diameter of circle M is greater than the diameter of circle N.

For e.g let the diameter of circle M be 10 cm. If the radius of circle N is 4, which is less than 10, then the diameter of circle N is 8 and therefore, circle M is greater than circle N. On the contrary, if the radius of circle N is 7, which is less than 10, then the diameter of circle N is 14 and therefore, circle M is smaller than circle N.

Therefore, from statement A, we cannot conclusively find out which of the two circles is larger.

From statement B. The ratio of the circumference to the diameter of circle M and N are the same.
The ratio of the circumference to diameter of any circle = will always be same for any two circles. Hence statement B alone also does not answer the question.

Combining statement A and statement B, we have no additional information. Therefore, from the given two statements we will not be able to answer the question.

The correct answer is (4).
